Assignments: the purpose versus the perception

Assignments are usually designed with a specific intent to give some type of benefit to the student. In the foundation level, Academic Writing course students are required to write an academic style essay appropriate to their future undergraduate degree and complete portfolio tasks specifically related to the writing of an academic essay. This was designed to encourage students to reflect on their assignments making connections between the portfolio tasks and their essay. However, this session questions whether the aim of these portfolio tasks was perceived by the students in the way in which they were intended.
